On 24 September 2025, Professor Liesbet Geris from our partner VPH had the honour of presenting in the SANT Committee of the European Parliament on the transformative role of AI and digital technologies in healthcare.
Speaking in this official setting underlined how central digital health has become to Europe’s policy agenda. Prof. Geris highlighted practical applications already reshaping care:
· Patient-specific models for cardiovascular surgery
· Digital Twins for medical training
· AI-assisted insulin management in intensive care
· Pharmacogenomics for personalised therapies
· Simulations accelerating treatments for rare diseases
The discussion was enriched by the active participation of MEPs Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, Margarita de la Pisa Carrión, Ondrej Dostal, and Adam Jarubas (Chair of the SANT Committee). Our VPH colleagues also appreciate the interest shown by MEP Sommen, underlining her political engagement.
As Prof. Geris reminded us: “We started this work from the needs of the patient and the clinicians, not from the researchers – and it must remain the driving force.”
Key takeaway: AI and digital technologies can revolutionise European healthcare — but success will depend on regulatory clarity, reliable data, professional training, and coordinated EU support.
